What Positivity is Not

Recognizing What Positivity Is Not

Exploring the other side of a powerful tool for choices and decisions to create our lives.

I write weekly about positivity and how important it is in my life. Further, I espouse how important positivity can be to the whole world.

The thing that cannot be ignored, however, it what positivity is not. So let me explain what that means.

Positive AND negative

Thinking and feeling positive does not and should not ignore, erase, or negate negativity. Positivity does not make negativity go away, because you can’t just eliminate negativity from your life.

positivity is notI don’t like feeling bad, down, blue, angry, frustrated, or any other negative emotions. This, in my experience, seems to be true of most people. Yet it is an undeniable part of life, of the human experience. Things are going to happen that are going to make you feel negative.

This can actually be healthy. Why? Because that negativity can be a total wake-up call. For me, it tells me where my headspace is and lets me know that my conscious reality creation is not aimed the way I would like it to be.

Positivity is not meant to erase and eradicate negativity. Instead, it is meant to turn it around, to change its direction, and to help you regain control of your mindset. In my mindfulness practices, positivity is how I shift my headspace so that I better manifest the things I desire to, and live the fullest life that I can.

Positivity cannot stand alone

Recognizing and acknowledging this is important. Positivity does not exist in a vacuum all by itself, it is the opposite of negativity. Like most polar opposites, there is a lot of color and grey between the extremes.

Positivity is made up of thought and feeling together. I can think positive all that I want, but if I am not feeling positive I cannot generate positivity. Instead, what I will have is a conflict, because I not give that positive thought the feeling it needs to build real positivity. Feeling bad but thinking positive can lead to self-doubt, distress, and frustration because I can’t figure out why my positive thoughts are not making me feel good.

If like me, you are better at thinking than you are at feeling, this can get really frustrating. For me, if I am thinking positive why aren’t I feeling positive? The same is true if you are better at feeling than you are at thinking. The answer, in either case, lies in your subconscious.

Mindfulness matters

When I am not present in the now and being mindful of not just my thought by my feeling, I am not practicing mindfulness. Unsurprisingly, this means that my subconscious is doing the driving. If I have been allowing myself to get distracted, scroll through Twitter and Facebook posts about all the terrible things happening in the world, my subconscious has gotten saturated with that.

The subconscious will drive feeling if you are not practicing mindfulness. In other words, if you are not being aware of both your thoughts and feelings, particularly in the here and now, you may be unable to make use of positivity.

It is not the car – but it can be the fuel for the engine

You and I are complex, multifaceted creatures. What makes you tick may be similar to what lights me up, but they are still loaded with differences.

positivity is notPositivity is just another tool in the cosmic toolbox for choosing my life experience. Because you and I are living in a fear-based society it is too easy to come across negativity rather than positivity. That being written, choosing positive can be a more difficult action than deciding on negative.

Because of the overabundance of negativity out there, positivity can require a more thorough search to be found.

Positivity is a long-game strategy rather than a short-term tactic, even though it can be applied both ways. This is not a game-changer, nor will it provide instant gratification. What it will do is alter your thought process, and most importantly give you hope and tools to build better – as opposed to discouragement and tools to destroy.

The choice and decision are for you and me to make. I know I prefer feeling positive to feeling negative. How about you?

Finding positivity is not hard, but using it requires thought, feeling, and action

Knowing both what positivity is and what it is not, you can make the best use of it for consciously creating an ideal reality. When you employ positivity as a part of your life you open yourself up to being mindful, building a life you most desire to live, and that ultimately empowers you. When you feel empowered, your mindfulness increases, you become more aware overall, and that tends to spread to other people around you.

As such, you can build more positive feelings and discover more things to feel positivity and gratitude for.

Gratitude leads to happiness. Happiness is the ultimate positive attitude. An attitude of gratitude is an attitude of positivity that begets even more good energies – and that, like you, is always worthwhile.
