Do You Reset Yourself with the New Year?

Some people use the New Year to implement change.

Like it or not, the one and only constant in the entire universe is change. Change can, will, and does occur, whether you are ready for it or not. You frequently can control little to no of the change you experience. But not all change is outside of your control.

When it comes to you and your life experiences, you have the power to choose to make changes. Specifically, changing who, what, where, how, and why you are.

This begins by becoming aware of your conscious self. To do that, you ask questions like,

  • What am I thinking?
  • What am I feeling?
  • How am I feeling?
  • What is my intent?
  • Is my approach positive or negative?
  • What am I doing?

These questions can only be answered here and now, in the present. Once you have those answers, you become actively consciously aware – i.e., mindful. Mindfulness puts you in the driver’s seat of your life experience.

This is never, however, a one-and-done matter. Why? Because change is always happening, what you desire today might not be what you desire tomorrow, and the like.

Hence, choosing the new year to reset yourself is a common practice.

Why do people reset themselves with the new year?

It’s something of a tradition to use the new year as a catalyst for change. New year, new actions, new approaches, and so on. Likewise, people often make changes on their birthday or for anniversaries and such.

I think a big part of why the new year inspires change is because of the word new. What’s actually new? Apart from the changing of the number for this year, nothing. Yet the number, the change, can be the impetus for new choices and decisions to change certain things in your power.

When you recognize and acknowledge how much you can’t control and can’t change, choosing something new is empowering. And who doesn’t want to be empowered? There are so, so many forces out there disempowering us all. When you can make a choice and decision to implement change, it feels good. It makes you feel powerful. And that’s what empowerment is.

You don’t need the new year to be empowered. But for many people, they need the symbolism of this to make the moves and implement changes for themselves. However, this is where many fall into a trap.

It’s never one-and-done

Many people are fans of New Year’s Resolutions. They resolve to do something new, something different. Thus, they resolve to go on a diet, join a gym, cut back on alcohol or fried foods, start journaling daily, or something similar.

The problem with resolutions is that they’re passive. They are thoughts, ideas, concepts, but often are missing something. Hence, I choose to take a New Year’s Action rather than make a resolution. Action is active, puts the work in, and starts the ball rolling to change things.

But then there is the important caveat to this. Nearly no change is a one-and-done action. It frequently involves repetition, reset, repeat, and so on and so forth.

To change anything at all, you must make a concerted effort. You need to take action, often more than once, to implement and create changes. And for many people, this is where they lose it. The repetition required to genuinely reset yourself in any fundamental way gets lost.

We live in a quick-fix, instant gratification society. We want things now, instantly, no delay. Hell, often we want them yesterday. Thanks to same-day delivery, the 24-hour news cycle, and the immediacy of the internet, we get flustered when that’s not what we receive.

Most ways you would choose to reset yourself with the new year will involve action. Frequently, repetitious action. You can’t resolve or take an action to write a blog once a week if you don’t write a blog once a week. Going to the gym once won’t help you get into shape. One day of dieting isn’t likely to improve your health, wellness, and wellbeing. To reset these, you need to keep acting on them.

Implement change on a schedule

In my experience, creating a schedule is the key to resetting. You need to decide to go to the gym three days a week (and choose those three days), write on the same day every week if blogging weekly, and pay attention to the food and drink you put into your body.

Many people reset themselves with the new year, but fail to make significant progress beyond the first few weeks because they don’t consistently follow through. Creating a schedule for the change you desire to make, or the reset you are eager to do, can help you succeed.

Maybe you reset yourself for the new year, or maybe not. Either way, know you’re worthy and deserving of resetting yourself whenever you desire to.

Choosing to reset yourself with the new year isn’t hard

It’s all about practicing active conscious awareness (mindfulness) of your thoughts, feelings, intentions, and the positivity or negativity of your approach to direct your actions.

When you recognize and acknowledge that you are the only one in your head, heart, and soul, you can see what your options are for resetting yourself and making a change in your life, during the new year or at any other time. Knowing that you alone know your conscious self, you can make choices and decisions to implement change and reset, more or less, whenever.

This empowers you, and your empowerment can empower others around you.

Consciously choosing your approach to life towards positivity or negativity — from the vast cylinder that exists between them — shifts life in a way that opens greater dialogue. From that dialogue, you can recognize, explore, and share where you are between the extremes and how that impacts you here and now.

Choosing thoughts, feelings, actions, and intentions for yourself opens the way for a positive approach and attitude via your actions. This can lead to realizing amazing potential and possibilities for your life.

The better aware you are of yourself, here and now, the better you can choose and decide what, how, and why your life experiences will be. When you empower yourself, it can spread to those around you and empower them as well. That is an amazing conduit to help reason to overcome fear in the collective consciousness.
