Who Am I Disappointing?

Should I be concerned about disappointing myself? I struggle with this pretty frequently, and I know I am not alone in this. Who am I?  I ask that question a lot.  Part of why I keep asking is because I am constantly changing – which is part of the human condition.  Another reason why I ask is because I know that you probably have a different impression of me than I have of myself. Ever hear a recording of your

Will Your Path Make You Happy?

What is important to me is that I live a good life, and am happy more often than not. We all have different priorities.  Nobody’s emotions are exactly the same.  While we may give our emotions the same names, odds are how they feel to each of us differs. Taking that another step, what makes me happy is going to be different from what makes you happy.  Not just because of how it may feel differently to each of us,

How Do You Feel Positive?

You woke up today.  That is tremendously positive. You have air in your lungs.  Your heart is beating.  You have thoughts in your head.  These are all filled with positive energy. You are reading these words on a computer, tablet or phone.  The positivity of that is impressive. It is very easy to forget that the positive exists in the smallest, most trivial things in our lives.  Just being alive and living every day is immeasurably positive. I know that

Do I Know Who I Am?

I have a pretty good idea about who I am. Yes, in some respects I am two people – one in the real world, one in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) – but overall, I am simply me. I wrote about this yesterday at my author website.  But one of the bridges that I am frequently working with is the one between MJ and Malcolm.  Who I am and what I do in the SCA versus the mundane world,

What Can We Americans Do About This?

My fellow Americans. It is time to take action.  We are under siege, and we are being terrorized.  Not by some foreign power, not by armed militias in the streets…but by our own President. President Trump is unfit for this office.  If you do not see this for what it is, then I feel rather sorry for you.  This man is in a position of authority and power which he is not just unqualified for, but dangerously uninformed and unprepared

What Do You Take-Away From This?

What you take-away from a less-than-desirable situation is important.  Seeing the good you learned from the bad is the key to this. We all have bad experiences.  There are going to be things that happen that are infuriating, complicated, difficult and unpleasant.  Life cannot always be perfect.  Frankly, if it was, I think we’d all get really really bored of it. When bad things happen – and they will – what you take away from them is important.  If you

What Do You Do With Your Freedom?

If you are reading this, you probably have freedom. Freedom means a great deal.  In the USA, freedom means the right to gather peacefully, to protest injustice, to love whom we choose, to worship as we wish, to express ourselves, and more.  The positivity of this is immeasurable. However, there are things we are going to see in a free country that we do not approve of.  White supremacists and neo-Nazis waving flags and taking to the streets is not

What Makes For Success?

You name it, I will write it.   Does this let me be a success? I love to work on fiction.  I began writing sci-fi at age nine, and I have been working on my fantasy series, The Source Chronicles, for about twenty years.   There is something about fantastic worlds that I just love to write out.  It’s exciting, and frequently invigorating. Almost six years ago I began regularly blogging.  One weekly post has become three, and the theme of the

Who Gives You Permission?

You need nobody’s permission to walk your own path in life. But you will receive an awful lot of advice, and help both useful and not from people. When you decide to walk your own path, if, like mine, it is in any way unconventional, people will question it.  When enough people question what you have chosen, inevitably YOU will begin to question it, too. We all have people in our lives who feel they have carte blanche in regards

Are You Having Fun?

Never neglect doing things that are fun. When I was between 11 and 14, I went to overnight camps in upstate New York.  Sometimes we would take hiking treks offsite.  On two or three occasions, we went hiking at a place called Kaaterskill Falls. I absolutely loved this hike.  The falls are in two levels, the middle level having a clear pool one can swim in, and a natural amphitheater behind the falls.  This was one of the hiking adventures
