Positivity in the Moment

Finding positivity in the moment

Nobody can be positive all the time, but moments of positivity can be a tremendous boost on your psyche.

Why do I write about positivity every week? Because negativity is all too easy to come across, and difficult to resist.

Do I believe you should never feel negative? No. Shit happens. There are days where life sucks. Bad things occur, people get sick and die, friends turn on you – and that’s just the personal crap. Spend any time reading about politics or other world affairs and see how long it takes you to get angry or begin to feel helpless and hopeless.

The issue as I see it is not about never feeling negative, nor always feeling positive. The issue, to my mind, is mindfulness. Again, not the end-all-be-all-cure-all of the world like some people try to sell it. This is the basic, general awareness of your own thoughts and feelings in the here and now.

Why does that matter? Because you get to choose how long you will think about or feel something. It is your decision, if you are feeling bad, how long you will let that dominate your mindset.

Thoughts and feelings are totally intertwined whether you are aware of it or not. Hence, being aware can help you choose the direction in which you are going. Since it’s incredibly easy to just let your subconscious grab hold and take the wheel it’s almost effortless to lose track of present awareness of your thinking and emotions.

Self-help is all about the self

Getting caught up in herd mentality and collective consciousness happens. To everyone. I know that I am not mindful and aware of my own headspace all day every day. When your brain is constantly on the go and always processing inputs and stimuli, let alone chewing on past missteps, triumphs, failures, successes, and everything else that’s happened – you might just be on autopilot.

That’s going to happen. This is just part of human nature. I know that there are lots of people who seem to be mostly content to just go with the flow. And I have no problem with that…unless, in going with the flow, they are mindlessly spouting propaganda, hate, and other hurtful things at other people. That’s mindlessness, and that’s a whole other topic for another essay.

When people are unhappy, discontent, and desiring change that’s where self-help comes in. This has become a whole industry that a lot of people have cashed in on. Hell, I desire to cash in on it by sharing my philosophy of mindfulness, conscious reality creation, and positivity…but not at the expense of my humanity.

Self-help is just that. Helping yourself. But the form it takes is not singular, nor does it tend to be a one-time deal. Self-help is taking action to work on your mindset in order to put yourself in a better place, so that you can grow, change, evolve, and overall be a more content and happier person.

Positivity can be a part of that…but not at the cost of denying your humanity. When faced with the potential loss or a loved one, a life-threatening illness, or extinction from climate change, positivity can look like utter bullshit. In the face of these, positivity is a mindfulness act to shift your frequencies and raise your energy.

Positivity in the moment

Just like you cannot necessarily be positive all the time, neither can you be negative all the time. Constant, unmitigated negativity will make you sick. I mean it truly can make you literally sick. Stress often results from a deluge of constant negativity, and stress leads to high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, and other really unpleasant things.

positivity in the momentThis is why finding positivity matters. It can be just in a moment, in order to shift your mindset. In a day full of negativity having even a moment of positivity opens you up to change that you can control. It helps you to see hope.

Constant, non-stop positivity is equivalent to wearing rose-colored glasses. It’s just not realistic. But when you can find or create SOME positivity, you make it easier to shift your mindset and get control over your thoughts and feelings. Getting control means that your subconscious isn’t leading you down a dark alley where you’ll most likely get mugged or otherwise beaten.

You are empowered to think and feel of your own accord. Mindfulness is making use of that power.

Finding positivity is not hard, especially in bite-sized increments

Knowing that nobody can be positive all the time, neither should they be negative all the time. When you see this for what it is, you can work on finding or creating positivity in the moment to shift your mindset, and that ultimately empowers you. When you feel empowered, your mindfulness increases, you become more aware overall, and that tends to spread to other people around you.

As such, you can build more positive feelings and discover more things to feel positivity and gratitude.

Gratitude leads to happiness. Happiness is the ultimate positive attitude. An attitude of gratitude is an attitude of positivity that begets even more good energies – and that, like you, is always worthwhile.
