Expressing Gratitude on Memorial Day

Expressing gratitude develops tremendous positivity.

Today is Memorial Day, and I want to say Thank You to all of those who have served the country for the greater good of all.  Those who have chosen to put their lives on the line so that the rest of us may live in relative peace and comfort are not thanked enough for all that they do and have done.

Today we remember those who died protecting our freedoms.  Expressing gratitude for the sacrifice those people made is a matter of respect.  Gratitude carries tremendous weight overall, and remembering those who gave their lives in defense of what they believe in is more important and proper than getting into any political debates about it.

Expressing GratitudeI know that I could not have served in the way that you have.  So I am deeply grateful for what you chose.  Thank you.

Modern society tends to put an emphasis on holidays that has little to nothing to do with their original purpose.  Memorial Day has become the unofficial start of summer.  So we think of barbecues and that first weekend at the beach and car and mattress sales.  This is certainly not the only holiday our society commercializes.

Ironically, the message of gratitude and remembrance winds up being co-opted by messages of lack and need.  It’s easy to get caught up in the hype and neglect the greater notions of expressing gratitude for all that we have.

Even if we have imperfections in the lives we lead, we have the ability to make choices far beyond simple survival, in part because our particular society enjoys freedoms which have been upheld and strengthened by those who have served.

Expressing gratitude daily builds more good in the world

I am in no way saying we should feel guilty about taking the trip to the beach, the backyard barbecue, or taking advantage of the Memorial Day sales.  It is for these freedoms that those who served and died in the service of our country did what they did.

Expressing GratitudeWhat I am suggesting is that we take a moment, every day but today in particular, to say Thank You. Take a moment and remember those who gave all so we have all that we do in this society.

Generating the positivity that comes of gratitude will further help us to create a better world where, we can all hope, such sacrifice in the future will not be necessary.

THANK YOU.

Finding positivity is not hard, but it does require action.

Expressing gratitude for the sacrifices of those who gave their lives so we could be free generates positivity, and opens us to better appreciating the lives we have.  When we are appreciative of others, and we thank them, it makes all of us feel good, and as such, we ultimately empower ourselves.  When we feel empowered, we often spread that feeling to others around us, and as such can build more positive feelings.  We can use the positive feelings this generates to dissolve negative feelings.  When we take away negative feelings, we open up space to let in positive feelings, and that is something we can be grateful for.  Gratitude leads to happiness.  Happiness is the ultimate positive attitude.  Positive attitude begets positive energy, and that is always a good thing.
