What Does It Mean to Do It?
Do it. Two simple words that have amazingly tremendous power.
There is something to be said for planning. Some people need plans to do the things they do in this life. And there is equally something to be said for impulsiveness, too. Sometimes you just gotta go go go. But whatever you are looking at, action is required. That means you have to do it.
For many, myself included, doing one thing led to fear that it would or could cause another to be missed. If I date her, what is someone more perfect comes along? Take the job in this city, what if a better job in that city comes up? Buy this car, but what if that car is better? Certainly there can be consequences for choice. But without action you have stagnation.
When you stagnate, you don’t go anywhere. No growth, no advancement, no change. The world is going to continue to move, and change will happen no matter what choices you do or don’t make. When you choose to do it, you make a choice.
Consciousness creates reality. Do you tire of me writing that? I continue to place it here because I need to remind myself. I’ve seen it work, have experienced manifesting things because I gave my thoughts, feelings and actions to no other outcome but the vision in front of me.
My favorite Yoda quote says, “Do or do not, there is no try.” Plan, but don’t over plan. Consider the actions you need and want to take. But don’t let yourself get caught up in inaction, fear of missing out, or any other procrastination you can come up with. Further, do not just half-ass it, make a half-hearted attempt. Do it. Full bore, all ahead full, damn the torpedoes. Do it.
Do it for that which you desire.
Nike’s Just Do It campaign was undoubtedly really successful. A lot of others have taken this and made a great deal out of it. The notion of taking action to make something happen doesn’t just apply to athletics.
Each and every one of us is infinitely more capable of creating a life we desire than we believe. Most of conventional and traditional society often informs us that there is a tried and true way. The problem with this is that we frequently wind up in a constant battle between the beliefs that we are given long before we learn to hold beliefs of our own.
As a kid, before the frontal lobe is fully developed, an astounding number of our traits, core beliefs, prejudices and understandings about the workings of the Universe develop. We learn from our parents, our teachers, and our community what is considered standard. We are encouraged to learn and grow, but not in the process to release beliefs that do not suit us.
I am in no way berating our education system for this. One of the larger issues here is that society has a very specific path we are expected to take into our early twenties. Go through school, either learn a vocation or go on to college, then get a job, leave the nest of your parents’ home, and start living.
All too often, though, we are expected to accept certain “truths” in regard to this. You get to accumulate debt for your college or vocational schooling. You may have to accept a less-than-ideal job in order to pay for your home, food, clothing and such. Maybe you will continue in that job for more money so that you can add toys like cars and iPads and boats and such.
Don’t just do it because it’s expected of you.
Breaking out of the acknowledged societal norms can be scary, disconcerting, and even terrifying. We need lesser or greater degrees of human interaction, and even the most introverted among us do not want to get kicked off the island.
As I have been working on manifesting the life I most desire, working on my writing in whichever form it takes, I have had to take jobs that left me feeling wanting. Corporate America and I tend not to see eye-to-eye, because I tend to think too much and ask too many questions. Yes, I have partaken of the argument that this is an excuse on my part, but like many aspects of human beings, I’m just not wired that way.
I interviewed for several jobs. Two in particular had the best prospects. One was actually rather perfect. I would be doing content editing. So, look at that, work along the lines of my actual, factual skillset. The hours offered were perfect. The other job was yet another call center, forty or more hours a week, low pay, and a crowded, noisy office. More than a week passed, and I got an offer for the job I didn’t want.
I wanted to reject it. I am so, so tired of working at jobs that leave me feeling dissatisfied. But I need to bring in a more immediate and steady income.
When I decided to do it, and accept the job, I lit a fire under my own ass, so to speak. I was determined to not actually take that job. Because of a rather extended screening process, it would be about two weeks before my start date.
That meant to me that time was up. I had two weeks to find something better.
Sometimes you do it as a stepping stone.
I determined that I would, in those two weeks, find a more favorable job writing or editing. I have had enough with being unhappy with my job. When I thought about what I wanted, I felt what it would feel like to be at work, and I acted as if I was not going to need to start at the call center.
A phone call came in. The job I had really wanted but thought had passed was still available. What action could I take to make it mine? Provide references. Less than three hours after doing so, I landed the job I wanted.
When you make a real decision, and you go ahead and do it, you can manifest your desire. I am excited about what this means for my ability to consciously create reality. The door has opened. I decided not to hesitate, and step through. I decided to go ahead and do it.
Stay tuned. As always, thank you for crossing the bridges between my worlds with me.
This is the seventy-seventh entry of my personal journey, the Crossing the Bridges series. My collectively published writing can be found here.
