How Does Praise Empower?

Everybody likes to receive praise.

When you do a thing, and you do it well, receiving praise for it feels amazing.  It is incredibly empowering, and it serves as an affirmation of the choices you make along the way.

For whatever reason, though, our modern society eschews praise.  We have an almost surreal talent for criticism, but when it comes to praise, we seem to display something of an aversion to it.

PraiseI suspect that one of the reasons for this is because there is a backlash borne of false praise.  When we over-emphasize the celebration of mediocrity, and heap praise for simple participation, we disempower in the interest of inclusion.  We praise all, or we praise none.

Yet we are almost obsessed with criticism.  Now don’t get me wrong, there are situations where this is completely called for, like politics.  An example of where this is over-the-top is when it comes to celebrities.  There is an entire industry of media focused on what they wear, their level of fitness, whom they are dating, and so on.  Snarking at celebrities is accepted as the price they pay for being public figures.

Unfortunately, this carries over to everyone else.  People tend to criticize and comment on the people in their lives with far more negativity than positivity.  What we forget is that, while we don’t actually do these things maliciously, they impact the people around us and lower all of our frequencies.

Consciousness creates reality.  When you are focused on the flaws and negatives of the people around you, that is what you draw more of to you.  It does bounce back.  Heap criticism and comments at people, and they will be returned to you.  This, in turn, makes nobody feel terribly empowered.

Praise raises our frequencies.

Everything in the universe is based in energy.  All energy has a frequency.  Low frequencies are made of low feelings, low energy.  High frequencies are made of high feelings and high energy.  The low makes us feel bad, the high makes us feel good.

This is why praise matters.  A lot of work environments people experience involve trying to avoid criticism and disapproval, thus cultivating low vibrations and frequencies.  Avoiding getting judged by our bosses and coworkers is not empowering, and doesn’t feel good.

When we work in an environment where praise is given for jobs well done, achievements that are made, and good performance, we are empowered.  This type of environment cultivates high vibration and frequencies.  Working for reward is empowering, and feels good.

I can’t think of anyone who does not prefer to be rewarded over being penalized.  Being given an accolade feels good and empowers us to continue to perform at high energy.  When we receive penalties and judgements if we do not meet a given standard, we are disempowered, and likely to continue to find little or no satisfaction in what we do.

Is it easier to criticize than to praise?  No.  However, I think because a lot of energy was given to praising for simply participation and averageness, praise comes less easily.

Again, it’s important to look at our society.  Everywhere you look people are being criticized and judged for anything you can imagine.  While some is justifiable, like in the case of our government, much of it is not.  While the majority is not intended to be mean, it still lowers the vibrational frequencies of our energy.  Thus, we are great at making ourselves and others feel bad.

Like pretty much everything in the world, starting small can snowball.

Be aware of whether you are offering praise or judgement.

It starts with us.  How often do you wind up talking about someone you care about or love critically?  Does it come rather easily?  Is your criticism more observational than malicious?  How does it make you feel?

I love my friends and family, but I am frequently being critical of things they do.  It doesn’t come from a place of spite or intentional meanness.  I think it’s a matter of comparison to my own thought processes on a given situation.

The challenge is to be aware.  Oh, look, something else that comes down to awareness of the here-and-now.  When I am thinking about the people in my life, when I am critical of their actions, I am lowering all of our frequencies.  Ergo, it is up to me to consider this, and change my reactions consciously.

One of the best ways to do this is to find reasons and means to praise.  If I can offer praise I am raising all of our frequencies.  Praise makes everyone feel good, and when we feel good, we choose more wisely, and I believe consciously, our thoughts, feelings and actions.

Recognize false praise and constructive criticism.

Two words of caution here.  First – false praise.  Praising for mediocrity can be as disempowering as criticism.  Wow, you got out of bed this morning – good for you! is rather mocking.  This is where we lose the power praise can generate.  Praise can still be for simple things, such as you look good today or I like that shirt on you or you are raising incredible kids.

Second – constructive criticism.  This is a real thing, and can actually be empowering.  Criticism feels bad.  That pie you baked wasn’t very good makes you feel lousy.  Thank you for baking that pie.  Could I offer some flavoring suggestions? might still be awkward, but opens the door to dialogue rather than judgement.  There are times people need help to improve in some way or other.

Praise can be incredibly empowering.  When you are walking a path you have chosen for yourself, praise goes a long ways to make the journey better.  Consider how criticism and praise make you feel, be aware of how you are thinking and speaking about people around you.  Raise everyone’s frequency by offering praise.

Like I said in Positivity this week – You are amazing.  No matter if we know one another or not, I want you to know that I believe you are amazing, and can do incredible things.

What praise have you offered of late?

This is the three-hundred-fifteenth entry in my series. These weekly posts are ideas for, and my personal experiences with, walking along the path of life.  I share this journey as part of my desire to make a difference in this world along the way.

Do You Know That You Are Amazing?

You are an amazing individual.

No, really.  I might not know you in the slightest, but I can honestly tell you that you are an amazing person.  We may disagree about any number of topics, we may have totally different and diametrically opposed backgrounds, but I can still tell you that you are an amazing individual.

You Are AmazingPeople tend to not give themselves enough credit.  We look for our faults, we work on the things about ourselves that are flawed…but this is backwards.  Working from the negative does not help to build more positive.

American culture in particular stresses how inadequate our lives are.  We need the better car, bigger home, fitter body and so on.  We look to all of our flaws, our shortcomings and the things that are lacking, and we give that a tremendous amount of energy and thought, feeling and even action.

Consciousness creates reality.  Negativity begets further negativity.  When you are looking for the imperfections, the problems and the flaws – you will constantly find more.  Does this strike you as backwards as it strikes me?  Why give the energy to negativity, when what we in fact want is positivity?

We all find ourselves alone from time to time.  When we are alone, we tend to look at the problems we have faced, the hardships, the issues that need to be repaired and worked on.  But what we really should focus on is our abilities, our skills, good things we do for ourselves and our friends and loved ones.

We should put that energy not towards all the negative things we find in ourselves, but rather to the positive.  Focus on what an amazing individual you are, all that you are capable of doing and achieving, and don’t give that energy to your perceived shortcomings.

Know how amazing you are.

The trap that we often fall into is the feeling of selfishness.  We have become utterly self-conscious about things we do being perceived as selfish.  Thus we take selflessness to a place where we often do, in fact, lose track of the self.  We get so concerned with how others might perceive us that we instead look for the imperfections and flaws in ourselves, so that we can actively avoid anything that might come across as selfish.

Amazing, you areConsciousness creates reality.  I cannot stress that point enough.  When you look for and give power to negative perceptions of the self, you actually get even more of those.

It is time to step back, and recognize ourselves for all the amazing things we have to offer.  This is not an act of bragging or selfishness, it is an act of recognizing the positive, giving that more energy and attention so that we can drive out negativity and feel good.

When all is said and done isn’t this what we most want?  Don’t we prefer to feel good, to feel happy?  Are these positive or negative feelings?

Please take a moment not to look at the money you need to find, the weight you need to lose or anything else negative about your life.  Instead, recognize, acknowledge and give energy to the amazing individual you are.  Your talents, your creativity, your strengths, your ability to love and be loved.

Explore all the positive about yourself and energize that rather than the negative.  You ARE amazing.

Finding positivity is not hard, but it does require action.

Knowing that you are an amazing person, you can build off of that premise.  When we examine our strengths, our talents, abilities, our capacity to do everything we can do and more, we empower ourselves.  When we feel empowered, we frequently spread that feeling to others around us; as such, we can build more positive feelings in the collective consciousness.  We can use the positive feelings this generates to dissolve negative feelings.  When we take away negative feelings, we open up space to let in positive feelings, and that is something we can be grateful for.  Gratitude leads to happiness.  Happiness is the ultimate positive attitude.  Positive attitude begets positive energy, and that is always a good thing.

Positivity: Always something to be Positive about

There is always something to be positive about.

Sometimes you have to look harder than others, but there is always something.

IMG_1327

I know there are times when it all seems as though it is for naught. That it is hopeless, and that there is little to no point. Despite this, I maintain there is always something to be positive about.

You are alive. You are here, you are breathing. You have opportunities and options before you. You have a chance to make a difference. You can turn things around.

I think probably everybody goes through at least a brief period where none of the above actually strikes them as positive. Pain, deep sorrow, grief, extreme jealousy and the like can certainly make everything positive seem utterly out of reach.

There is always something to be positive about.

No matter how bad things seem, no matter how much hurt you are experiencing whether physical or emotional, no matter what awful things you might be undergoing, there is still something positive. There are people, there are places, there are things that will make you feel better. You are alive and can turn around this situation. It may take time and effort, but it is still possible.

I recognize that people suffer from depression and anxiety and paranoia and fear in ways that make this statement seem like total bull. There is anger, and deep sadness and a seemingly endless ocean of negative emotions some people are stranded upon or within, and to them it can feel like there is nothing to be positive about.

But there is. There is always something to be positive about. Every day can be different. There will always be new opportunities, new experiences, chances to change it all. I know how hard this can be, I have been there, I have fought the demons of depression and anxiety. I am still fighting them and always will be. Despite that, I know there is always something to be positive about.

Take a minute of your day to find something that makes you feel good. Stand in the sun, play with a dog or cat, watch a video that makes you smile, listen to music, reach out to a friend or loved one. Whatever it takes to help you see that there is ALWAYS something to be positive about.

IMG_1417

Don’t give up. I know there are times where that seems the easiest option, but I believe there is always something to be positive about to be found. I believe you can do it, and you can find it. I believe we all can, and we should all help one another to do so.

There is always something to be positive about.

Finding positivity is not hard, it just requires action. Knowing that there is always something to be positive about, we can find solace. When we recognize that no matter how bad things are or might get we can still seek out and find something to be positive about, we empower ourselves. When we feel empowered, we often spread that feeling to others around us, and as such can build more positive feelings.

Positivity: What you carry with you

What do you carry with you?

When you wake up in the morning, do you begin feeling renewed? Do you start out your day looking forward to what’s coming, or dreading what’s ahead?

We all carry different weights on our shoulders. We all have things we have to do, whether we are fans of them or no. The important part is what we choose to make of these weights.

IMG_0198

Challenges or burdens? Problems or opportunities? Matters or issues? They’re going to be there no matter what we do, the question becomes how do we approach them?

We all have the power to choose. Do we carry around negativity or positivity with us? There are challenges that we face daily, but we have the option of choosing to face them as insurmountable or approachable. We are empowered to choose.

It is far too easy to just let them go. Go with it. Don’t choose, be carried by what we face during the day and whom we encounter and all we experience. Read about that death and carry the sadness and anger. Read about the moron politician and carry around the disappointment and rage. Read about the pain and suffering around the globe and carry around the feelings of helplessness and despair.

We get to choose. Of course we will find things that create negative feelings. It is perfectly normal to feel sad at a loss, anger at blatant selfishness, despair at oppression. The difference is feeling them, and carrying them around.

We are all really really good at holding onto things. Often we hold onto things long after they serve us. We need to feel negative emotions to appreciate the positive ones. That’s just the way it is. Human nature, welcome to it. What we do not need to do is to carry it around like an epic set of matched luggage.

Feel it. Experience it. But then let it go. Why carry around something that does not serve you or your greater good? When we leave our homes to go to work or school or just out, we leave stuff behind all the time. This is not really any different, we get to choose what we carry with us emotionally.

IMG_0200

This is a matter of empowerment. We forget just how much of this is truly ours to choose, and we get too caught up in moments. I am sad at the loss, I am angry with the selfish self-righteousness, I feel bad for all those people being oppressed out there. I acknowledge how this makes me feel, but I need to choose for my own day, for my own actions to come to not carry that with me. If I do, it will color all I have to in my day, and while it may come up again throughout the day, I can pick it up and then put it back down again. I don’t need to carry it with me.

Feel the feels, but try to only carry around with you those which empower you and build positivity.

Finding positivity is not hard, it just requires action. Knowing that you can choose what to carry with you, you decide to carry along what you need. When we make that choice and don’t carry those negative things with us through the day we empower ourselves. When we feel empowered, we often spread that feeling to others around us, and as such can build more positive feelings.

Positivity: Run with it

Let it happen, or run with it.

Life is all about choices. We can choose to accept life as it comes, or we can do our best to empower ourselves and take control over it.

IMG_5764

When we are inundated by the big pictures of our world, it can be a rather depressing place. So much anger, so much hatred, so very much fear. We are soaked within it, and expected to shake our heads sadly and wonder what, if anything, we can do.

We can choose to empower ourselves, and we can run with it.

All too often we allow ourselves to be products of our environment. We allow random and varied media to tell us what race, color, creed, religion, gender, wealth bracket and other places we belong in. We work because we have to have shelter and food and other essentials, not to mention conveniences like computers and tablets and smartphones.

Still, we have choices. We can choose to let life live us, or we can take control and work on living life for ourselves.

I know a lot of people who had a lousy 2015 for any number of reasons. Rather than simply hoping that 2016 will be better, we need to take control, and we need to make our own way. We can let it happen, or run with it.

I want to run with it. I am taking actions with my life to get to the places I want to be, rather than just sitting back and letting it happen.

This can be challenging. Some days are harder than others. However that doesn’t lessen the choices I can make. It does not lessen my abilities to empower myself.

IMG_5784

Being in control and running with it is hugely positive. Why? Because you are taking control and empowering yourself; you have the opportunity to choose whether to aim for the positive or to allow negativity to take charge.

I would much rather be the one figuring out what is right for me than to let anyone else out there do it. I would rather look for the positivity in this world rather than focus on the many negatives that are dominating our media feed. I want to reach the end of each day and not lament what has happened to me, but to celebrate what I have accomplished.

Let it just happen, or run with it. What would you prefer to do when it comes to finding and experiencing positivity?

Finding positivity is not hard, it just requires action. Knowing that you can choose to either let life happen or to run with it, you can choose to take action. When we act on what we want from our lives and we make choices to go forward we empower ourselves. When we feel empowered, we often spread that feeling to others around us, and as such can build more positive feelings.

Positivity: Action for the New Year

You have the power to take action and change.

As the year draws to a close, instead of making a resolution, take an action to change your life.

IMG_0462

A resolution is merely a thought, and maybe an emotion. I resolve to eat healthier. I resolve to go to the gym regularly. I resolve to put more money into savings. Resolution is thought and the feeling it will bring about. Resolution is a step in the right direction, but it lacks motion, it is lacking in necessary action to make it actually happen.

Action is what we need to really change. We can think about and feel change all we want, but the ACTION is often neglected. This is why resolutions are often forgotten or otherwise don’t work as intended.

I resolve to eat healthier. Instead of making a drastic change, take a smaller action. Stop eating cookies or don’t drink soda or something small to start with. You can always build on it.

I resolve to go to the gym regularly. Rather than intend a daily trek, start small. Hit the gym twice a week, at least 20 minutes a session. You can build from there, expand upon the action and make it more.

I resolve to put more money into savings. Start with fifty cents a week. It may not seem like much, but it’s a start. You can increase it as time goes on, but so long as you have a minimum and a date to deposit to savings you have action.

We think grand, we want huge results, but even the grandest notions start small. Little attainable actions are far more powerful than grand soon-neglected resolutions. You have the power to completely control this and effect change as you best want it for yourself.

IMG_0504

Small, easy to maintain actions are a huge step towards building greater positivity. When the action is easy to do we feel success more readily. When we feel success we feel more positive. Positivity builds, and the more positive we feel the more we spread to those around us.

I think if we focus on attainable New Years’ Actions rather than grandiose resolutions, we can build far more positivity in our lives, and get more of what we want from the world.

Finding positivity is not hard, it just requires action. Knowing that you have the power to take an action for the new year rather than make a resolution, you can change anything. When we act on change, rather than just think and feel change, we make things happen, we build success and consequently empower ourselves. When we feel empowered, we often spread that feeling to others around us, and as such can build more positive feelings.

Positivity: You Are Amazing

Who you are is pretty amazing.

It does not matter what job you have or what categories you place yourself into – you are amazing.

IMG_2192

Geek, jock, nerd, Gen-Xer, Millenial, man, woman, gay, straight, bi, trans, black, white, tall, short, fat, thin, American, Asian, Christian, Muslim…doesn’t matter, you are amazing.

We live on a planet with a rich diversity of ideas, of cultures, of traditions. We can communicate instantly across the globe with little or no effort. We can experience one another’s differences of opinion and idea and we can learn from one another too.

We get too focused on the negatives of our differences. The extremes, the minority that want to stir trouble and cause us to fear the differences between us. From utterly intangible differences like religion and nationality to the tangibles like skin color and gender a tiny group of very loud people want to divide us. Split us. They want to use the fear and anger over slights and differences to gain power and control that is utterly artificial.

When we begin to see how amazing each and every one of us is, no matter our perceived differences, we can build great things. We can create a world that can be full of hope and opportunity and peace.

The holiday season is an ultimate paradox. Greed and consumerism on one hand, peace love and joy on the other. Show love and affection for everyone around you, but buy all the toys! You have to spend the money to buy the joy, they try to tell us. I disagree.

There is no price in recognizing how amazing everyone is. But the value is incalculable. When we start to see what makes us each unique but similar we should celebrate that and learn from one another.

IMG_2309

Fear destroys. The loud minority loves to use fear because it gathers followers who might otherwise be more rational and thoughtful if their base concerns were not being played.

Who we are, each and every one of us, is something to take heart with. Shaming and tearing down generates only negativity. We need to build more positivity in this world and recognize the exceptional aspects of our diversity. Who you are is pretty amazing, and so are those around you, near and far.

Finding positivity is not hard, it just requires action. Knowing that who you are is an amazing person, you can also begin to look for and see the amazing in everyone else out there. When we acknowledge that we are all equal in our capacity to be amazing we empower ourselves. When we feel empowered, we often spread that feeling to others around us, and as such can build more positive feelings.
