Positivity: Mood Changers

Lots of different things can change your mood.

As such, there are countless options to build more and greater positivity.

IMG_4454

I find that if I wake up stiff or sore, if the clouds in the sky feel oppressive, or if posts across social media are getting me down, I have a lot of different options to change my mood and to alter my feelings.

What works for me might not work the same for you, but I think there are a number of basic ideas like attitude shifters that can help us reclaim a positive attitude. These are some other mood changers I try to employ:

Music. There is nothing quite like music to alter how I am feeling. I find that when I am writing I love to listen to movie scores and Russian classical works. On a road trip I sing along to something. There is nothing like the power of music to change how you feel. One note of caution – music can also bring you down, so mind what you choose when you are trying to generate positivity.

Light. I am addicted to sunlight. I crave it like a plant. I love the warmth of the sun on my skin, it makes me feel happy and connected to the world. Sometimes just having lights or candles lit can really go a long ways towards making me feel good, so I need to remember there is no need to be in a dim space. But the converse to that is:

Dark. Sometimes there is nothing more comforting than finding a dark space in which to be alone. In the dark as I close my eyes to meditate I can better focus on manifestation, on my heart beat, on clearing away random thoughts that are obscuring my path. This is not the murky light in a room on a cloudy or rainy day, this is almost sensor-depriving darkness I am giving voice to here. In a literal void you can choose to find and experience much positivity.

Water. Some people love to soak in the tub. Swimming can be liberating, as you nearly fly through the water. Standing beneath a steaming shower can free your muscles and relieve aches and stiff joints. Zen practices often use the idea of flowing water for how life moves, and it is rather apropos, because the unseen energy that everything is made of at its core flows like water, too. Water can be an incredible restorative, and a great positivity conductor.

Wedding bands

Touch. Even adults need security blankets of some kind or other. Touch can seriously alter your mood. The sensation of soft fabrics on your skin, the cooling breeze of a fan, a hug, a caress, a kiss. Touch can be a powerful mood changer, and we all need contact from time to time to reassure us, to connect us to the rest of humanity.

These are just a couple ideas we can all use to change our moods. Changing our moods away from negativity to positivity can go a longs ways to finding happiness.

Finding positivity is not hard, it just requires action. Knowing that there are things we can do to change our moods, we can work with this to help us feel good when we are not. When we actively work on changing the mood we are in, we empower ourselves. When we feel empowered, we often spread that feeling to others around us, and as such can build more positive feelings. We can use the positive feelings this generates to dissolve negative feelings. When we take away negative feelings, we open up space to let in positive feelings, and that is something we can be grateful for. Gratitude leads to happiness. Happiness is the ultimate positive attitude. Positive attitude begets positive energy, and that is always a good thing.

Positivity: Endless Possibilities

The possibilities are endless.

This phrase gets used and abused, but that does not make it any less true.

Despite all the messages to the contrary, we live in an abundant universe. That means that the information we are often presented with of lack and limitation are incorrect. There are endless possibilities.

IMG_4441

What this translates to for everyone is that we can create all the good things we want. Yes, there are going to be bad days and yes bad things that are utterly out of our control will happen. Yet we still have unlimited options for what we want to create with our lives.

It does more often than not take a conscious effort to see the world for possibility. Look at how inundated with negative messages we are. We see war, hatred, greed, corruption, extremism and never-ending messages of fear plastered all over the media. Hard not to focus on these and see a world of lack and scarcity and impossibility.

Yet there are alternatives. We have more direct control over how we feel and how our own personal lives will be than we allow ourselves to experience. We can look at the world not as a scary place full of fearful nightmares, but instead as a place where the possibilities are endless, where we can make and change and remake our lives, a world full of possibility where we can manifest our exciting dreams and learn and grow and change as we would desire.

It is unfortunate that finding positivity seems to take more effort than finding negativity. I think this is largely because in the world of 24 hour news and instant communications negativity just manages to get spread more quickly. But because possibilities are in fact endless, we can change that. We can counter the messages of despair with hope, of hate with love, of war with peace, of exclusion with inclusion, of intolerance with tolerance, of division with unification; we can respond to the negativity not with more negativity but with positivity, negative messages with positive messages.

IMG_4434

I know it is very hard to turn it all off, and I know that it is important to be informed. However, allowing the negative messages to soak in and the hopelessness to overwhelm is something you can choose to stay away from. We live in a world of endless possibilities, and because this is true we can choose instead to find hope and positivity and spread that. We can share things that make us happy when things that are not are tossed at us.

Anything is possible. We just need to remember that the next time we think there is no hope and no possibility.

Finding positivity is not hard, it just requires action. Knowing that there are endless possibilities, we can find hope and joy and happiness even when we are inundated with negativity. When we choose to see life for its endless possibilities, we can choose to be hopeful, seek out the possible, find and create better lives for ourselves. As such we empower ourselves.

Positivity: Escape the Insanity

We can step away from the insanity.

Sometimes that’s what we should do. Step away. Turn it off. Tune it out.

IMG_4457

Despite the amazing interconnectivity of our world today, we still have the ability to get away from it. We can ignore social media, we can avoid the news, and we can find things that make us feel good instead.

Let’s just admit that there is a whole lot of crazy out there. We are inundated with things that upset, anger, infuriate and even depress us. I don’t care where you fall in the modern political nightmarescape or where your religious or spiritual or moral viewpoints lie – divide and play on fear appears to be the way of things.

We don’t have to be slaves to the connections that allow us to stay in touch with one another, we have the power to turn them off. We can leave them behind and get away from it all, if we so choose.

There is something to be said for leaving your mobile phone, tablets, computers and other technology behind in order to get away from the negativity. It can be a deeply positive experience to find something else to focus on and be clear of the barrage of information.

There are so many other things to occupy ourselves with. A hike in nature, quiet meditation, reading a real paper book, losing ourselves in music whether recorded or live, a game of cards with friends, playing with children or just cuddling with someone we love. All of these things that make us feel good generate positive energy, and I don’t know anyone who does not crave to feel good and thus experience positivity.

We do not need to always be available, and we do not constantly need to be connected. It is both healthy and comforting to step away from the world and be disconnected. The internet will still be there when you get back, and will get on just fine if you are not connected to it continually.

IMG_4459

Sometimes we forget that we can shut down the electronics, we can unplug from the world and do things. There is a great deal of positivity in not being on top of everything happening out there every minute of every day, and I know that I feel better when I take a step back from it all.

We can still be there for our friends and the rest of the people we love, even when we choose to step away. There are ample times when it is a far better choice to detach from the information overload, and reconnect with your immediate surroundings in the here and now.

It is ok to put the internet down for a while. Your sanity will likely thank you.

Finding positivity is not hard, it just requires action. Knowing that we can get away from the insanity of the world simply by turning off the multitude of social media outlets we connect ourselves to, we can choose to find alternatives that make us feel good. When we cease to be bombarded by our interconnectivity and focus on more immediate and positive things, we empower ourselves.

Positivity: Labor Day

Today in the United States is Labor Day.

The most positive thing about this day is the victory achieved that made it so that there are no more sweat shops in this nation, so that we have protections about getting breaks during the work day, and other privileges we often take for granted.

Many people’s sacrifices and struggles and hard work made this day possible, and that is a positive thing.

IMG_0417

Fighting for something good that you believe in is a positive thing. When it comes to basic human rights, EVERYBODY deserves the chance to live a decent, equal and happy life.

There are a lot of people out there who would love to turn back the clock, return us to the world of exclusions and denials of rights and equality only for those who can afford to pay for it. Today marks the celebration of the victory of the masses to not have to be worked to death, and that is something we should honor. Take a moment today and think about the freedom we take so readily for granted, and beware the negative messages of those who would take it away for their own gains.

One of the great positives we have in this world are the laws that protect us from greed. Laws that protect us from greed-induced harm. We take this for granted more than we realize, I fear, and see only the three-day weekend or impressive retail sales that mark this day. Also positive, but a small piece of a much larger pie in need of acknowledgement.

We get inundated by negativity, and I write this blog every week because I believe that the world we live in is in fact better than that. There is always positivity to be found, and I seek and share it wherever I can.

This day is a celebration of freedom from oppression, and that is nothing but positive. We all deserve fairness, we all deserve to be treated like valued individuals, and Labor Day is all about that. Let us remember positively those who have gone before us so that we might have this, and celebrate the best we can.

IMG_4310

Today is proof that we live in world that is not lacking positivity. I know it can be hard to see, and difficult to find at time, but it exists. We can find and create more, we just have to remember that it’s there for the taking and it is there for EVERYONE.

Finding positivity is not hard, it just requires action. Knowing that good people who went before us made our world a better place, we can celebrate them and what they have gifted us with. When we take the time to see the positivity in the hard work that has gone into making our world, and express our gratitude for it, we empower ourselves.

Positivity: The Good

Sometimes it’s really easy to lose sight of the many good things we have in our lives.

If you are reading this, chances are you live in a place where you have freedom, where you are encouraged to think for yourself, where you have opportunities to grow and change and to do and be the things you desire.

IMG_5841

When I watch the news of the world I sometimes get caught up in just how awful some people’s lives are. The thousands upon thousands of refugees with no homes, the people living in war torn nations where food and electricity are scarce, the people living in places where heavy-handed regimes dictate the majority of their lives for them.

If you are reading this, then like me you are more fortunate than these people. You have the means to surf the web and educate yourself, you have the ability to change your life in a manner that brings you the most opportunities.

Yes there are some awful, negative matters across the globe that impact us in various ways. Focusing on them and giving them energy and attention does not help them, or us. We can send messages to the people in power asking them to do their jobs and do something, but even that does not help us to be and feel more positive.

I am not trying to be cold or callous or uncaring towards those who are suffering out there. But I can’t help them or anyone if I do not recognize and acknowledge my own world. It is not petty and small or even selfish to take time to find positives in our own lives, because when we feel more positive we can help to spread positivity to others.

On a more personal level, there are times when I get caught up in seeing all those terrible things out there, and forget to be grateful for my life. I sometimes neglect to be properly grateful for what I DO have, and to express that gratitude. Gratitude goes a long ways towards building positivity, and it is something easily given that we withhold for reasons unknown.

IMG_5774

Sometimes this whole thing seems ludicrous. Sometimes it is easy to question what it’s all worth, and to wonder if it matters in the end. The reality of this is that it does, and we should be grateful for what we have and to give more focus and attention to the good things in our lives. The positivity this generates can and will spread, and we will gain more things to feel good about as such.

Finding positivity is not hard, it just requires action. Knowing you have a surprising number of good things in your life, you can give them more focus and expressions of gratitude. When we recognize all the good things we have and we give them more attention than the bad things out in the world, we empower ourselves.

Positivity: The small stuff

How do you find positivity when you are thoroughly inundated by negativity?

I am frequently amazed by just how many negative things can be found across the internet. In especial, social media is frequently used as an outlet to complain about politics, social dynamics and other life matters. I see so many more complaints than commendations, it can be rather disheartening.

IMG_1341

This is of course the reason why I started this particular weekly post. I needed to put something positive out there to see if I could help to turn the tide.

The problem is that negativity begets negativity. The more negative things we put out there, surprise surprise, the more negative things we receive. When we get focused on that, it can be hard to see positives in the world.

But life is full of more positives than negative, when you look at the small stuff. Sure the big picture worldwide stuff can be scary and a real downer, but when we give it our focus and attention we just help to make it bigger and scarier and more dominant.

So let’s look at the small stuff that is so much more positive. You’re alive. You are reading this. You have the sky above you. You have things for which to be grateful. You are able to make choices about the life you want to live. You can seek out positivity over negativity. You have the power over your own life right here for the taking.

Yeah yeah yeah, heard it all before. So what? The thing is, when we start by focusing on the seemingly mundane, small positives in our lives it turns out we will discover more and more positives. The smaller positives will lead to larger positives. Starting small is the key to getting greater empowerment and more positivity for yourself.

IMG_5866

Another means to combat negativity: think before you post. Whether an e mail or a tweet or a meme to Facebook or whatever, think about what you are putting out there. Is this something positive or negative? Am I showing a positive and supporting something or a negative and opposing something? Be aware of what you are giving in order to be aware of what you want to be getting.

When we make more conscious and conscientious choices about where we give our attention, we have the opportunity to decide if we will seek positivity or negativity, and we can further choose which of these to share with the world at large.

Finding positivity is not hard, it just requires action. Knowing you can take the seemingly insignificant small stuff that is good and give that your attention, you can use it as a stepping stone to greater positives. When we can find greater positives in our lives, we can use those to empower ourselves.

Positivity: Turning Negativity Around

What do I do when I am surrounded by negative people?

That’s a really good question. What DO you do? In especial when you have no means by which to escape them (co-workers and family come to mind here).

This is not too dissimilar in respects to news articles and social media posts calling attention to negative things, except those you can delete and ignore. How do you deal with other people’s negativity and not have that impact you?

IMG_0707

Every situation is different of course. But I have a couple thoughts on how to turn matters around and find/generate more Positivity.

Redirect. Try to change the topic of conversation, try to introduce something positive or pleasant or otherwise happy.

Don’t engage. When they try to get you to converse with them about that person or that negative thing or what-have-you, don’t let them engage you in the conversation. Avoid the topic and try to shift the engagement to something else. Redirect.

Gratitude. Talk about things for which you are grateful. Verbalize these things and give thanks for them, say how grateful you are for these good things and ask those around you to express things they are also grateful for.

Confront. I am not suggesting you be in any way negative or cruel, but some people simply do NOT realize how negative they might be. So you might need to point it out to them as gently as you can, so as to bring it to their attention. You might even convince them to change their approach.

Excuse yourself. Come up with a reason to walk away and remove yourself from the situation, even temporarily. Trouble with this is that the negative person will still likely be there when you return, but if the other four ideas I have mentioned above are no good for you, then it might be your best pursuit.

IMG_1545

The main thing is to not let those negative people change your attitude and your own focus to negativity. Yes, this is certainly easier said than done, but it is still totally doable. You can’t change someone else’s feelings, but you CAN change and control your own. The key to handling negative people is to keep yourself positive and not give in to their negativity. You always have choices.

Finding positivity is not hard, it just requires action. Knowing that you will sometimes encounter negative people, you have options for how to deal with them. By choosing an option to keep yourself from joining them in feeling, thinking and acting negative you empower yourself.
