Positivity: A metaphor for Safety

Even with the safety harness, you don’t want to lose your balance and fall.

I recently did a “treetop” ropes course.  Various obstacles to be crossed, thirty-five feet in the air, including rope bridges and tightropes and other challenging constructs.  You cross the obstacles from platform to platform in a harness on a secure line, but you still don’t want to fall.

It occurs to me, however, that this is an interesting metaphor of our lives.  Even when we fall, we usually have a safety harness to keep us from losing our lives.

Yes, I know that bad things can happen.  We might go bankrupt, we might be in a serious accident and suffer permanent damage, we might face emotionally crippling situations and be clueless as to how to cope.  But apart from death, we can and will recover from our fall.

I know that this can bring about unwanted changes when it happens.  But if you are here, alive, you are still able to do so very many things.  Even when it all seems bleak and hopeless, you have opportunity to take hold of matters and change them.

Life is full of endless possibilities.  We live in a Universe where we can consciously create our realities, and we can draw into our lives more good than we often realize.  As long as we are alive, we have possibilities, and positivity can allow us to realize innumerable opportunities.

Even when we fall, unless we die, we can still recover.  Maybe not to where we were before, but then when are we ever where we were before?  Life is a flowing river, sometimes fast, sometimes glacially slow.  But it is always flowing, always in motion, always changing.

You are here.  That means that, even if yesterday was horrific, today doesn’t look much better, and tomorrow feels like it may be an even larger pile of suck, it can still be altered.  We will still be caught in the safety harness and survive when we fall.

I know it sometimes feels like we lack that safety harness.  It feels like we will just fall, and fall again, with no end in sight.  But I maintain that so long as we are here, we can seek out positivity to change our personal corners of the world for the better.

Positivity is ultimately a safety harness.  You can use it to find good in bad situations.  You can employ positivity to turn around negativity, and to arrest your fall.  Positivity can allow us to see that, hey, so long as we are here, we are still able to move from day to day, to grow, to change, to discover new and incredible things within our relatively small understanding of the universe around us.

Even knowing we have the harness, it’s still scary to fall.  But I know that there are more opportunities and possibilities to not just survive, but thrive, and experience ever-more wonders of the world.

Finding positivity is not hard, it just requires action.  Knowing that there is usually a safety harness to catch our fall, as long as we are alive, here on this earth, we can do almost anything.  When we recognize that positivity is part of what will arrest our fall, we can use this to see what we still have even when we experience loss, and thus we empower ourselves.  When we feel empowered, we often spread that feeling to others around us, and as such can build more positive feelings.  We can use the positive feelings this generates to dissolve negative feelings.  When we take away negative feelings, we open up space to let in positive feelings, and that is something we can be grateful for.  Gratitude leads to happiness.  Happiness is the ultimate positive attitude.  Positive attitude begets positive energy, and that is always a good thing.
