How Do You Choose To Feel Today?

Do you want to feel good or bad today?  Positive or negative?  Empowered or disempowered?

How do you choose to feel?Despite the insanity of the world at large, or our jobs, or our families and friends, or any other outside influences, WE get to choose how we want to feel.  It’s our decision to feel good or bad, strong or weak, empowered or disempowered.

This feels like a lie, doesn’t it?  Welcome to Monday, the start of the work week.  Oh look at the continued insanity in Washington, DC.  What’s the deal with this unbelievable weather?  End of the month, bills are coming due…overwhelming, right?  Only if you allow it to be.

It’s all too easy to get caught up in this.  Social media is all over bad news, and not just bad news but sad, frustrating, infuriating news.  It’s almost like there is this unspoken challenge to see how angry or sad or otherwise negative they can make people feel.  History says it can go a long ways.

When we allow this to affect us, it can be really difficult to see that we are still in control.  That’s because if we are disempowered, we cede control.  When we cede control, the infamous “they” take it for themselves.

Sometimes it’s really easy to just give in.  All the negativity in media can seriously overwhelm even the most positive person.  We’re bombarded by it, and being emotional creatures, it’s hard not to have it phase us.  Yet the more we allow for the negativity to soak into our psyche, the more disempowered we become.

We can choose how to feel.

I am in no way saying that you’re never going to feel negative feelings.  One of the driving forces of our existence is using a negative thing to inspire a positive thing.  The challenge is not allowing it to overwhelm us.  We can empower ourselves to take these negative things, feel them out, then release them in some form or other.

Choose to feelI know that I sometimes lose track of how I am feeling, and allow negativity to linger.  Holding onto that is going to disempower me.  When I feel disempowered, I will succeed at finding more things to make me feel bad.  Sound familiar?

Take a deep breath.  Allow yourself to feel negativity, let it flow through you, and then LET IT GO.  Release negativity, and do what you can to bring in positivity.  In this way we can empower ourselves, and the forces that strive to disempower us lose their potency.  I know I prefer to feel good, don’t you?

Finding positivity is not hard, but it does require action.

Knowing that we are inundated by negative, disempowering messages, we can choose how to take them in, and whether we allow them to disempower us.  When we feel the disempowering negativity, but choose to release it rather than hold onto it, ultimately we empower ourselves.  When we feel empowered, we frequently spread that feeling to others around us; as such, we can build more positive feelings in the collective consciousness.  We can use the positive feelings this generates to dissolve negative feelings.  When we take away negative feelings, we open up space to let in positive feelings, and that is something we can be grateful for.  Gratitude leads to happiness.  Happiness is the ultimate positive attitude.  Positive attitude begets positive energy, and that is always a good thing.

Who Are My People?

I love my people.

Who are my people?  My people are the ones who I turn to for support, whom I look to for guidance, and whom I share a great many commonalities.

Crossing the Bridges 57I have found the majority of my people in the SCA.  Twenty-six years in the Society for Creative Anachronism has introduced me to a lot of people who are as into history and fantasy as I am.  My geeky tribe, frequently of fellow misfits.

Yes, I was one of those dorky/geeky kids in High School who existed either in the choir room, on or behind the stage, never amongst the popular kids.  I played no sports, my friends and I played Dungeons and Dragons.  I didn’t drink alcohol, but I consumed an ungodly amount of Mt. Dew.  My letter jacket was for letters earned in choir and theatre.

In college, when I moved halfway across the country, I made a good circle of equally geeky friends.  I also discovered the SCA, but didn’t truly dive in until I had graduated.  But when I did, I found my people.

I have previously written about the difference between persons and people.  While today I am referring to my people, they are my persons.  They are not the random world population that can often be incredibly frustrating.  My people, however, might not be your people.  By the same token, your people might not be my people.

This harkens to my favorite George Carlin routine about stuff.  Your stuff is stuff while other people’s stuff is shit, and vice versa.

Our people are like our stuff.  While we might have ever increasing circles of people, not all meet the same criteria.

Variations of my people.

There are several thoughts I have on how I categorize my people.  There are those I am closest to.  These are the people I want to spend the most time with, and whom I share the most about myself with.  We have connections on a lot of different levels, and I would move mountains for these people.

Then there are the people whom I consider friends, but am not as close to.  There is still a great deal of myself I share with these people, and I care about them as well.  Our connections are likely fewer than those I am closest to, but I would still take a great many actions for these people.

After that, there are the people whom I may not know as well, but share a commonality with me.  Some are SCAdians like me, and we have the hobby we participate in in common.  We may only be friends on social media, or we may only encounter one another at events from time to time, but we do not really know each other well.  These are still my people, overall, though while there are actions I will take for them, they are fewer.

Along the same line are the writers I know.  I am a part of several different writing communities online.  Because we all strive in the craft and arte of writing, we have something pretty amazing in common.  We share ideas and tricks and standards for our writing on a large number of different topics.  Mostly we only know each other online.  Yet these are my people, overall, and there are things I will do to be of help to them.

Why do all these people matter?

As I work on crossing the bridges between the worlds I perceive, some real, some imagined, recognizing that my people are rather numerous can be a huge source of hope.

Hope matters, particularly in the face of a lot of what is going on in the world around us.  So much negativity, so many terrible things of varying degrees, it’s really easy to lose hope.  Why bother?  Will any of it matter if any of these possible worst case scenarios before us come to pass?

Yes.  All of it matters.  Consciousness Creates Reality.  As such, if we allow ourselves to be drawn down into the negativity happening in the world, guess what we create more of?  But if we have hope, and we have our people, and we can rely on our people in different ways, we can strive to manifest better.

This is why I love my people.  You keep me going when I look at the negativity of the world, and I cannot tell you just how much I appreciate that.  You are a source of strength, and I thank you for that.

Keep this in mind whenever you start feeling like it’s pointless.  There IS still hope for a better world.  We have our people, and while we cannot directly change how anybody feels, we can effect the sensitivity, and we can work to create better.

My people are circles around me, ever increasing in distance, but still counted among my people.  Where my people and your people might overlap, we have an opportunity to change the conversation with a greater circle.  When we can see this, we can see that hope is a good thing, and we can create almost anything we can imagine.

Appreciate all your people.

Gratitude is a major source of positivity.  When we are grateful for people and things, we tend to discover more to be grateful for.  Gratitude feels good.

These bridges I want to cross may be for me alone, but I never truly cross them on my own.  That may be totally cheesy, but that doesn’t make it any less true.  Thank you for taking the journey with you.  Thank you for being my people.

GOAL LOG – Week 42:

Diet:  I have not been keeping track again this week.

Exercise:  Fenced twice, one day with a bunch of walking, but that was it.  Knee injury is still lessening my exercise.

Writing:  Four blog posts, and a lot of work on the sci-fi story.

Meditation: Only two days last week, for 5 and 6 minutes.

Gratitude:  I was not tracking gratitude again.

How Do I Interfere With My Path?

There are always things which will interfere with your chosen path.

Many of these things are beyond our control.  I can’t do anything about current government stupidity, hurricanes, foreign wars, and the overall negative attitude of other people.  Yes, I can write letters to the leadership, support hurricane relief funds, and take other proactive actions.  However, it’s important to recognize that this is limited, and needs to be proactive rather than reactive.

Why proactive?  Because if we are constantly reacting to the world around us, this reflects our subconscious being in control.  Consciousness creates reality, and if we are allowing our subconscious to do the driving, then we’re not taking control as we can.

This is where we get into the other things interfering with your chosen path.  You and me.  We will often do things, say things, think things that are actually contrary to the path we’re walking.  This is generally subconscious, which makes it more challenging to overcome.

I have written before about self-sabotage.  This is when I will prevent myself in some way from achieving a desired goal.  I get in my own way, and interfere with my path.  This will come from my fears of success and failure, and ultimate abandonment.

Even knowing, logically, what this is and where it comes from, it is rather easy to let the subconscious get control.  How does that happen?  Let’s say I am scrolling through Facebook, and I see an article about another terrible thing the government is doing.  This gets me upset, and if I don’t consciously release it, it lingers.  Anger, frustration, and subconsciously I am questioning, why bother?  If it’s all going to hell anyhow, what’s the point?

We allow things to interfere with us.

Before I know it, I find myself in front of the keyboard, and uninspired.  I am frustrated, I can’t focus.  Take a break, find a distraction, and then suddenly my day has flown by.  If I begin to question whether I accomplished what I wanted, and the answer is not what I desire, this may upset me.  If I don’t take hold of that, it can spiral out, and the next thing I know I am angry, questioning my purpose, skills, abilities, and worth…and my path has gotten away from me.

Does this strike a chord for you?  This is one of the largest forms of interference in our paths.  Rather than being kind and forgiving to ourselves, we are hyper-critical, self-doubting, and feel as if there is no worth in the path – or worse, no worth in ourselves.

As Admiral Ackbar would say, “It’s a trap!”  Getting stuck in your own head, subconsciously, can be detrimental to your path.  If we allow our subconscious to drive the bus, we cede our control, and interfere with the path we wish to walk.

Consciousness Creates Reality.  This is why it’s so important to be aware of our world.  When we don’t take an active role in being open and aware of the world around us, we inadvertently allow our subconscious to run the show.  Over time, this can cause us a great deal of distress, and will get in the way of any given day, let alone a desired path.

Yes, outside influences can effect this, but only if we let them.  Whether it’s personal, such as a loved one pissing you off; or societal, such as American politics, this can create negativity which the subconscious uses as fuel.

We can control our subconscious.

What it all comes down to is the majority of that which interferes with us is on ourselves.  We control how angry, upset, and how long we hold onto negativity.  When we believe things are bad, and that we are unworthy subconsciously, we interfere with manifesting our desires.

How do we deal with this?  First and foremost, we need to work on our awareness.  Yes, this is going to be somewhat challenging, but the more we do this, the easier it will become.  We tend to be all go go go, and thus seldom pause to analyze.  Many of us tend to be even less conscientious of this when it comes to ourselves.

I have mentioned previously the value in asking questions of ourselves.  How am I feeling?  What am I thinking?  What am I doing?  All of these simple questions of ourselves bring us to the here-and-now, and ultimately tap into our awareness.  When we are aware, we become more capable of seeing and dealing with any interference in our paths.

One of the problems with this is taking the time to actually ask these questions of ourselves.  Isn’t it amazing how quickly a day can just slip on by?  You’re working on things, or trying to work on things, and before you know it, the day is through.  Yet if we take a few moments, maybe once every two hours, to ask these quick questions, we can better be aware, and consciously create desired realities.

Is it really that simple?  I believe that it is.  Trouble is, in the interest of deep thought we humans seem to love adding unnecessary complexities.

There are things that interfere we will have to deal with.

Sometimes things happen that will interfere with your path, totally out of your control, that you won’t be able to just use awareness to rid yourself of.  Car accidents, a nasty headcold, getting fired from a job, dumped by a relationship, someone’s death, and the like happen.  They cannot be denied, and they can have unexpected consequences which might alter your chosen path.

How much any such thing interferes with life can still be your choice.  Recovering from injury and illness will take time, but attitude can help.  Modern medicine is incredible in many ways, but having a good attitude and keeping positive rather than negative can assist in healing.  Also, if you are feeling bad, do you really want to do anything that makes you feel worse?

When we are aware of our feelings, and we take the time to be conscious, we can manifest amazing things.  Any interference can be dealt with, when we take hold of it and choose to do so.  This can often be a challenge, but I believe that this can also lead to new and incredible realities which will make us feel good.  Let’s not let ourselves interfere with ourselves.

Why Be Polite?

It costs us nothing to be polite.

When did we become so impolite?  What happened that, as a society, we accepted rudeness, inconsiderate people, and selfishness to be the norm?

Why be polite?Walking through some stores, I was stunned how many people just cut us off, stopped in the dead center of a busy aisle for no good reason, passed dirty looks when I said excuse me, and let their children just run about without a care.  I thought about it, and began to wonder…when did this become ok?

The thing is, that doesn’t matter.  I cannot change how other people act, and I can’t make people pay attention to the world around them better.  What I can do is be mindful of my own actions, and strive to be polite, even when those around me are less so.

Doesn’t it make you feel good when a random person holds a door open for you?  How about when somebody gestures for you to pass them in the aisle?  Isn’t it great when people say “excuse me” or “pardon me” if they cross into your personal space somehow?

Politeness is an incredible form of positivity.  When people are polite to you, it makes you feel good.  Since we are incapable of controlling how other people act, that means that we have the power to BE polite, and give what we want to get.

I know that this can be tough in many situations.  But if, instead of turning to annoyance or anger or frustration with people, we are instead polite, we generate positivity, and keep ourselves in a good space.  Further, we can avoid an unpleasant situation turning into a truly bad matter.

It feels good to be polite.

Positivity 194 - be politeIt really does feel good to be polite to other people.  Even if they are not responsive to you, you know that you’ve made the effort, and as such have done your part to instill civility into the world around you.  As difficult as this can be in some situations, why add to negativity when you can counter it?

Maybe, if we are more conscious about being polite, people will respond in kind by also being polite.  Perhaps, from there, they will think about being polite, and spread it like a virus.  Wouldn’t it be nice to see more good news and more positivity in the world around us?  Being polite is not a bad place to start.

Finding positivity is not hard, but it does require action.

Is This Writer’s Block?

Not sure if I am dealing with writer’s block, or just simply having issues creating a topic today.

Writer’s block can take on many different forms.  Sometimes it’s just a lack of ideas.  Other times a lack of inspiration.  From time to time, it’s a lack of motivation.  Certainly it can be a combination of all of the above, too.

Writer's block?For me, there are times I just get distracted.  Might be a useful distraction, or it might be nothing but a plain, unadorned, pointless distraction.  Whatever the case, it’s important that I recognize when this is happening, and take steps to get away from it.  Letting myself be overcome by distraction is a form of self-sabotage.

Occasionally it’s a matter of self-doubt that is blocking me.  When it’s the blog, for example, I wonder if anybody cares about what I put here?  Does any of this matter to anybody, myself included?  Am I just spinning my metaphoric wheels and not gaining anything from this?

It never ceases to amaze me how one question leads to the next which in turn leads to the next.  There are always more questions than answers.  Of course, that’s life.  When we have no questions, we have nothing to learn, and learning is how we grow.  Learning is how we gain new knowledge, and new tools to let us consciously create reality and manifest our dreams.

Another factor in being blocked is outside influences.  If I feel as though I am doing little to nothing to help the greater good, that can be ultimately disheartening.  In our current social climate, that’s a real challenge.

Like any emotion, how long I let myself be blocked is entirely up to me.

I can break my block.

Like any emotion I can feel, I alone can choose how long to let my block sit with me.  Do I want to lament being blocked and moan about it and let it fester?  Or do I acknowledge it, and try to work out of it somehow?

Life is about choices.  I have chosen to walk my own path in this life, and cross the bridges between the different worlds I perceive that I live in.  I decide how to deal with my block, and like any other feeling I can choose to move away from it.

Guess where this particular post is coming from?  I have spent hours trying to come up with a topic, but nothing has hit.  I haven’t done any other writing or editing today, because I am feeling blocked.  Well, one of the best ways to break a block is to write.  Stream-of-conscious writing may be raw, and not something I would necessarily share, but it will in time break me from my block.

It’s akin to running in place or jumping jacks or any other exercise you do to get your heart pumping.  Banging out words on the keyboard is a mental exercise, and will stimulate the brain and clear out blockage.  It may be just a single step in the process, but it’s better than wallowing in self-pity over being blocked.

Other options for overcoming a block include meditation, some form of exercise to literally get the blood flowing, or maybe grabbing something to eat or drink, because sometimes that’s the problem.  Any combination of these options might also be the answer.

A writing block is something you feel.

It’s imperative to acknowledge that blocked is a feeling.  It feels a lot like frustration, annoyance, disappointment, distress, and even anger all combined to various degrees.  It can feel like guilt, too, because often being blocked is completely nonsensical.  There is often no why, it just is.

Hence why breaking a block is like taking control of and changing a feeling.  Because that’s precisely what it is.  If I feel blocked, I have to take steps to break the block.

I have more than one project in the works currently.  The sci-fi epic I’m really enjoying working on continues apace.  I need to continue to work on Guardians, and I need to return to the edits on Harbinger.  There is my modern alchemist story I started that I should continue.  I blog 3-4 times a week, and it never hurts to get ahead.  There are ideas in my head for some other new short stories I should begin to work on.

There is something new I’m doing to further my goals.  I am joining a group and taking some courses online to help me define myself better as a writer, and as a business.  There are several bits of literature I have downloaded as companions to this, and reading them can help break my block.

I think I have gotten past this now.  I am excited about the possibilities before me, and I think I have new means to create stronger bridges to cross between my worlds.

No room for doubt, I have work to do.

What Do I Choose?

What I choose is what is best for me.

Nobody but me can choose what I want for my life.  Why?  Because there is nobody else inside my head.

People question people’s life choices all the time.  I don’t know if it’s a schadenfreude thing, or a judgement thing, or something else.  We talk about it all the time, and we frequently discuss how we might have chosen differently, or comment about disagreeing with choices that have been made.

It’s important to recognize that nobody can choose for us.  Period, end of story.  I am the only one who can recognize what’s best for me, and I have to live with the choices I make, and don’t make.

Why do we frequently question other people’s choices?  I think sometimes it’s a matter of self-reflection.  Other times, it simply feels easier to look at what other people choose, and comment on it, rather than examine our own choices.

Many people are terrible at choosing and deciding about their lives.  I am certainly guilty of this myself.  Going back over my life, there were numerous times I decided not to decide, or didn’t make a choice because I feared the outcome.

What have I been afraid of?  Ultimately, I feared being abandoned, shunned, and rejected by almost everyone.  I feared success and failure equally, because I thought either would leave me forsaken by everyone.

I am still struggling with this.  While I strive to put on a confident exterior, inside I still fight the demons of my fears.  While I could put the blame on my combat with depression, that feels like a cop-out.  I have chosen to walk my own path, and though others might question this, I still believe in it.

Choose for you.

Deciding is something that can be scary.  Why?  Because when we analyze any given choice, it’s possible to see multiple angles and various outcomes.  To decide literally means in the Latin it originates from “to cut off.” A decision cuts off many, if not all alternatives, and directs you in one way.  In especial when there is more than one choice, knowing if you made the right decision becomes a concern.

Maybe that’s why we question the choices other people make.  Perhaps we’ve made a similar choice and got an unsavory outcome.  It’s possible that we had a similar choice, and in our own analysis of it saw no good coming of it.  Or maybe we had that choice, did not make it, and regret that.

Our society strives to undo that which we dislike.  Again, while I hate to get political, let’s look at Congress.  Rather than fix the Affordable Care Act in a reasonable way, they keep trying to undo it.  Instead of taking forward steps, they are going backwards.  Sadly, tons of progress made in the past decade is being undone all because of spite on the part of petty politics.

Anyhow, this is indicative of the state of our society.  We want to undo what we dislike, rather than do something different.  The Universe does not undo.

Consciousness Creates Reality.  I cannot stress this fact enough.  We might focus on undoing a thing, but the Universe doesn’t recognize this.  I don’t want x or we need to undo y the Universe translates as give me more of x and y.  Ever notice how when you focus on something you really do not want, you seem to get an abundance of it?  That is conscious reality creation.

Choose what you want to manifest.

You are the only one who can choose what is best for you.  Yes, it is almost habitual to comment on the choices other people make, but we can’t change anyone else’s choices.  The only person’s choices we effect are our own.

I know that there are people who do not understand what I want to do with my life.  Frankly, sometimes I get concerned about what I am choosing.  But I know that I am better off making choices and deciding on things for myself than just letting life live me.

I have never taken easy paths, but I have been so afraid of being rejected that I have frequently abandoned them.  Didn’t make use of my theatre degree, did not pursue a career in radio, never became a teacher.  After a long time, I have decided that I am a writer, and I will make my living doing that.

This is not an easy choice.  Working on my own requires me to be better at self-discipline, and making the optimum use of my time.  I would prefer not to return to the corporate world, because life is too short to spend most of my day somewhere sucking my soul dry.  Certainly if I can find the right environment in this respect, that is an option, however.

Because I alone can choose for me, it is up to me to take necessary actions to manifest the life I want.  I believe we live in an abundant universe.  As such, there is more than enough of everything I want to consciously create.  I am not taking anything from anyone else in doing this, and I am worthy.

Choose fearlessness.

FDR said “Only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”  When I allow my fear of failure, fear of success, and ultimate fear of rejection to overwhelm reason, it is imperative I keep this in mind.  Our fear response is necessary when it comes to the tangible.  That’s how we avoid getting eaten by lions and mauled by bulls.  But the intangible is immaterial, and is not a fear to concern ourselves with.

I am the only one who can choose what is right for me.  Only I can decide to allow intangible fears to get in the way of my choices.  It would do us all well to keep that in mind, the next time we question a choice either made by ourselves or made by another, for whatever reason.  We can all work together to be better than we are.

How Can I Best Support You?

I offer you my support.

I am fortunate to never have been sexually harassed or assaulted.  But I know a tremendous number of people who have been.  I believe you, and offer you my support.

Positivity 193We are all in this world together.  Every single one of us wants to live the best possible life we can.  And yet, there are people who do not think about how their actions effect others.  Some of it is simple thoughtlessness, some a matter of ignorance, some is malicious.

You and I are the only ones responsible for our actions.  Even if we ourselves are not victims of harassment or assault, we can still take an active role in looking out for our family, our friends, and even random strangers to stop such things when they happen.

This is a matter of positivity.  I will stand up for you, and will call someone out when I see them acting inappropriately.  I’ll tell them what they are doing is wrong, and I will call for them to apologize, make amends, and more – to correct such actions in the future.

How many people will post “Me Too” to social media before we realize there is a systemic problem?  Our society is fraught with misogyny and rape culture and other matters that we as individuals can better police.  We don’t need more laws to protect people…we need more accountability.  The time has come to not just sit back and watch when harassment happens, but to take actions and actively stop it.

Support is not passive.

I have been fortunate to not have been sexually harassed or assaulted.  But if I ever encounter someone being attacked, online or in person, I will not just ignore it.  I will call the offender out.  There will be intervention.  I will stand beside the person being violated, and express to the aggressor that he or she is in the wrong.

SupportSupport is not just saying I stand with you…it is actively taking a roll in letting abusers know they are in the wrong.  The positivity that comes of standing together, and taking an active role in fighting harassment and assault is incredible.

When we work together to recognize, call-out, and stand-up against abuse, we can lessen it for everyone.  Confrontation can be uncomfortable, but I imagine being harassed and assaulted is far worse.

Take a stand.  Support one another actively, and let’s end the cycles of harassment and assault.

Finding positivity is not hard, but it does require action.

Knowing that we have too many people in our lives who have been sexually harassed and assaulted, even if we have not experienced the same, we can take actions to break the cycle.  When we actively support those who have been attacked, and we call-out and stand up against abusers, we return empowerment to those being attacked, and we empower ourselves.  When we feel empowered, we often spread that feeling to others around us, and as such can build more positive feelings in the collective consciousness.  We can use the positive feelings this generates to dissolve negative feelings.  When we take away negative feelings, we open up space to let in positive feelings, and that is something we can be grateful for.  Gratitude leads to happiness.  Happiness is the ultimate positive attitude.  Positive attitude begets positive energy, and that is always a good thing.

Am I Being Proactive?

You may have noticed that by-and-large I only post positive, proactive thoughts.

Part of the reason why I choose this is because I feel horridly inundated by negativity.  There are so many things happening in the world right now that are upsetting.  Sometimes it is really hard to stay focused on creating good, because it feels increasingly futile.

Crossing the Bridges 55I began writing Positivity on Mondays to combat frequent negative messages at the start of the work week.  This has been really useful both for myself and others.  Pathwalking always takes a positive spin on the world, because the primary reason I choose to walk my own path is to create good in my life.

Consciousness creates reality.  So, when I continue to get angry over what the dumbass-in-chief does, or the inaction of Congress, or people denying science, logic and reason, is it any surprise I keep finding more?  Is it at all shocking that my motivation slips away?

I am frustrated.  This sinking feeling I often get as I browse Facebook and other social media is not useful.  Of course, the more attention and energy that I give to being concerned over where the world is heading distracts me from what I can control.

This is a systemic problem.  I know I am not the only one who, in the interest of staying in the know, winds up overwhelmed.  There are people I care about who are going to be, if they are no already, effected by a lot of these awful things.

What good does working on being proactive and positive do in the face of this insanity?

Proactive and positive are a force for good.

Because we manifest what we focus on with conscious reality creation, we have a choice.  I get to decide if I want to contribute to the feelings of anger, futility and hopelessness I am inundated with…or if I want to try to change the message.

This is not easy.  Maintaining my motivation to be proactive and positive is challenging.

I have mentioned before that I have long battled depression.  With the current state of the world as it is, and my empathic sensibilities, it’s been difficult.  I read and listen to a LOT of various self-help, motivational and similar works to build up my strength and fight off depression.

Because I have been working extra hard to combat depression, I am having trouble taking advantage of the opportunity right in front of me.  All my writing about conscious reality creation, and here I am in the midst of the perfect opportunity to make it go…and I am finding it difficult to be motivated to do so.

I recognize that there are steps I can take to work with this.  I just need to motivate myself to take them.

A friend recently asked me if I re-read my own work.  Truth is, once I have written and posted to the blog, I seldom go back to it.  I am great at offering insight into conscious reality creation, but not so good about going back and heeding my own advice.

I can write about actions I will take all day.  Motivating to take them, though, is another thing.

Proactive means taking the initiative.

Posting to the blog became a regular thing when I took an action on New Year’s rather than make a resolution.  I didn’t resolve to do something, I did something.  Action was taken.  I made a conscious choice to do, not to try.

Yoda said it best.  “Do or Do Not, there IS no try!”   I need to take ahold of my emotional state, follow my own words and be responsible for my own feelings.  It is time to take the initiative, stop letting myself be inundated by the negativity, and create the reality I want.

How?  Well, first, I need to spend less time online.  I already stopped visiting Twitter regularly because I didn’t need that volume of unnecessary and upsetting information.  The time has come to do the same to Facebook.  Keep messenger active so I can communicate with my friends, but close Facebook itself most of the time.

Second – I need to go back and reread what I have written.  I know that my writing impacts others.  That being the case, it’s really proactive of me to see if what I write can serve its primary purpose and impact ME.  This isn’t a selfish matter at all…it is an acknowledgment of the multi-purposefulness of what I write here.

Third – I need to stop getting down on myself when I get distracted, get upset over matters beyond my control that are happening, and so on.  I need to forgive myself for not living up to my own expectations of myself.  When I am feeling unmotivated, I need to allow myself a moment to feel it, but then I need to use an attitude shifter or another tool to be proactive and better consciously create reality.

Being proactive is empowering.

Finally, I must keep at it.  I cannot give up on myself, my goal to manifest the life I want, and using my consciousness to create my reality.  I alone can feel my feelings, and take actions appropriate or inappropriate.

Crossing the bridges is me consciously creating my reality.  I’ve got this.  I have done it before, and I will do it now.  The life I want and desire is mine to manifest, and I am deserving of it.  I know this.  It’s on me, and me alone to work with it.

Diet:  Mostly on track, but not writing it out

Exercise:  Fenced twice, but I did something to my right knee, so I’ve not been hitting the gym.

Writing:  Three blog posts, some work on the sci-fi story.

Meditation: Only two days last week, for 9 and 10 minutes.

Gratitude:  I was grateful for 5 things three days last week

What’s Your Opinion?

Everyone is capable of having an opinion.

Being entitled to an opinion, however, has frequently been carried to a dangerous and unhealthy extreme.

What’s the difference?  Let’s say that it is my opinion that the moon is made of green cheese.  We know of course that it’s not.  We have physical evidence returned from the moon to disprove me.  When you show me a moon rock, and explain to me that the composition of the moon is not cheesy, I should be capable of accepting that my opinion has been disproven.

Our modern society, however, believes in being entitled to your opinion, and as such denies fact.  How else do you explain flat earthers?  Science deniers?  Anti-vaxxers?  Facts to the contrary are being blatantly disregarded in favor of “popular” opinion.

Yes, some opinions are mostly harmless.  If you are five foot two and want to believe that you are tall, or you are old and want to believe you are young, it doesn’t cause harm.  The trouble comes when you try to force an opinion on others and inflict damage.

Look at American politics.  This administration ignores science and economic fact for opinion on numerous topics, and seems to be striving to return us all to the dark ages.  Despite a broad lack of support for eliminating the Affordable Care Act, the Senate very nearly succeeded at taking it down.  Opinion is overwhelming fact.

How did we get here?  When did we leave the age of reason behind and allow for faulty opinion to be the basis for policy and directing our society as a whole?

I have no answer.  However, I have thoughts on how to begin to change the conversation.

You can only control your own opinion.

This can be really hard to accept.  Why?  Because if our particular opinion is based in fact – for instance, it’s my opinion that the Earth is round.  Science agrees with me.  I admit that I cannot fathom how anyone in the 21st century believes otherwise.  For centuries now the vast majority have accepted the reality of a round planet.  How can anyone possibly deny this and believe otherwise?

Because some people feel they are entitled to their opinion, they are unwilling to let it go even when disproven.  They think they are right, and they will not hear or accept otherwise.  They get stubborn, even belligerent when you try to show them they are factually mistaken.  You can’t talk to them, and you won’t change them.

When we have fact on our side we tend to get into arguments with these people.  Why?  Probably because we cannot fathom how they can hold onto a ludicrous, non-factual notion.  Of course, to add insult to injury, usually arguing with people “entitled” to their opinions only causes them to dig in their heels.

This is why it’s important to recognize the only opinion over which you have control is your own.  I am the only one who can make up my opinions, and that is that.  I can argue until I am blue in the face, but when someone has decided their opinion is a fact, even with irrefutable proof otherwise, I will fail to change their mind.

Of course, this can get particularly ugly sometimes.  White supremacist marches, disempowering a protest with false patriotism, or name-calling and expressions of anger over a difference of opinion gets ugly.  More so in the face of opinions contrary to facts.

Working around false opinions can be done.

It’s not easy, but it’s possible.  How?  By working with others who believe in fact.  Marching for Science, for Women’s Rights, standing up peacefully against the KKK and white supremacists are all steps in that direction.

We tend to take a stand against the thing we do not want, including opinions.  While resistance is not futile, and often vital, it’s imperative that we stand FOR something.  The more of us who stand together in support of a thing rather than against a thing, the more we can affect the collective consciousness.

When we argue with those who hold opinions lacking in fact, we allow them to empower their opinion.  We end up giving them a forum to spout their non-factual opinion, and strive to legitimize it.

Recently, an acquaintance wrote an attack against a community I am part of with an opinion counter to fact.  Rather than argue with that person’s opinion, the majority of the community stood up for the fact of the matter.  From there, friends and acquaintances of the community also stood up for the fact.  Rather than an outpouring of anger and argument against the attacker, we’re seeing positive support for the attacked.

Sure, there is still anger and hurt over this opinion that was expressed.  Yet I think the outpouring of support for the attacked rather than countering the attacker with fact goes much further in generating a better outcome.

How does opinion matter to your path?

We all form opinions.  It’s human nature, because we believe in things.  We have faith in things.  The important thing is to recognize that while you are capable of having an opinion, you are not entitled to it, even when you are factually correct.  When we let go of our entitlement to opinion, I think we open ourselves up more to spreading fact and changing opinions that are held which are counterfactual.

This is challenging, but I believe it’s totally worthwhile.

How Are Our Persons Different From People?

The people who become our persons in this life can be an amazing source of Positivity.

If, like me, you find that overall people make you crazy, you understand this distinction.  What it boils down to is those who we get close to in various ways are persons, as opposed to those who are the faceless masses we refer to as people.

Positivity 192People in this sense tend to drive us nuts.  They cut you off on the road, they elect idiots to office, they disbelieve in scientific facts, etcetera.  Most of us, at least my persons, generally agree that people suck.

Trouble is, we live in a world with more than 7 billion people.  If we all have even a dozen persons, that means that we are surrounded by people.  And we tend not to think well of people.

Dehumanization has been a tactic used to divide and conquer for time immemorial.  All across human history peoples go to war, disagree about religion, possessions, social stratifications, and so on.  Look at the whole NFL protest business happening now.  The protesters are attempting to call attention to injustice and social inequality…but to dehumanize them, their detractors want you to think they are disrespecting men and women in the military.

While it is a great source of positivity to have our persons, looking at people in opposition creates more negativity.  Consciousness creates reality.  What we focus on and think about we tend to draw more of to ourselves.

When we think poorly of people in the general sense, we empower those awful things we don’t want.  We give it attention and energy, and we further expand the chasm between those we call our persons and the general people of the world.

Think better of people.

People vs personsThis is a challenge.  I often comment that people suck.  I get angry about the vast amount of greed, selfishness, foolishness and ignorance constantly brought to the forefront of our collective consciousness.  When we post memes on social media, read and watch news stories, and follow the tweets of the narcissist-in-chief, we get more deeply divided and as such, conquered.

We like, love and respect our persons.  We tend to dislike, loathe, and disrespect people.  I know that before I comment again about how much people suck, I am going to think about how disempowering that is, to both them and me.

Is it possible, if we extend the positivity we generate from our persons to people, we can make the world better?
